Instead of doing the smart thing and getting a better translation, I found and read this public domain one. In hind sight after reading the superior Hackett version translated by Cress, it would have been better to just wait for that one (or pay the small price). It's English prose is so slavishly loyal to the French structure and vocabulary that I began to believe a computer had translated it. I found it almost unreadable and was forced (out of meanness) to return to the original free French edition I had downloaded onto my Kindle.
